About Voices From Heaven

Product Description The Soweto Gospel Choir is an all-star aggregation in the veein of Grammy-winning Ladysmith Back Mambazo. VOICES FROM HEAVEN is Soweto's debut album. It includes an irresistible mix of traditional South African songs, South African and American gospel material and stirring version of well-known inspirational material sung in English and Zulu. Amazon.com South African choral music is renowned for passionate singing and soul-stirring harmonies. The Soweto Gospel Choir is made up of top talent from throughout that hard-scrabble yet celebrated Township. All sixteen tracks were seemingly recorded studio-live with no overdubbing or after-the-fact prettying-up. Paradise Road is led by a powerful pair of female voices who sing in English about walking hand-in-hand toward a place where there will be no more pain. It is almost unbearably poignant. A ceremonial yet ecstatic version of "Amazing Grace" renews the power and grandeur of a seriously hackneyed hymn. The selections are either sung a cappella or accompanied by a guitar-led mbaqanga combo, plus drums, hand-clapping, stamping, exhortations, whistling ,and high-pitched ululations. There is even a taste of sacred R&B and hip-hop! The lord being praised here is obviously a robust but loving realist; the voices are redolent of humanity in all its fragile, undying splendor. -- Christina Roden Review "Critics Choice! Moving and inspirational!" -- Evening News, Edinburgh "Sheer jubilation!! Earthy and unrestrained... The rhythm of life!" -- Herald Sun, Melbourne "Top 20!! Amassed voices are victorious!" -- The List, Scotland "You don't have to be a believer to be inspired!!" -- The Sunday Herald, Scotland About the Artist Soweto Gospel Choir, the most exciting vocal group to emerge from South Africa since Ladysmith Black Mambazo, will bring their magnetic energy, joyful spirits and beautiful harmonies to American audiences in January 2005 with the release of their American debut, Voices From Heaven, on Shanachie Entertainment. They will further enchant live audiences with their potent and inspirational African Gospel music at venues throughout the US on their ambitious 35-city tour, which launches in January ‘05 and runs through March ‘05. Soweto Gospel Choir is the recipient of the American Gospel Music Award’s "Best Gospel Choir 2003." They recently returned from a triumphant European tour in which they dazzled audiences at the prestigious Edinburgh Festival in Scotland as well as various concert halls and festivals throughout Europe, Australia and Africa. In November 2003, the Choir wowed fellow performers Peter Gabriel, Bono, The Eurythmics, Jimmy Cliff and Queen at the 46664! Concert in Capetown, organized by Nelson Mandela (taking its name from his prison number) to heighten awareness of the AIDS epidemic. In fact many of the international superstars kept the Choir onstage to back their own sets.
