C.P.E. Bach, particularly renowned for his unrivalled piano sonatas in the sensitive style (empfindsamer Stil), contributed to almost every important form of classical music. Recognizing the symphony as a medium of great expressive potential, he came to write an impressive nineteen total, of which two splendid examples are presented here. The Magnificat provides a more clearly baroque, and of course vocal, counterweight to the symphonies, moving through dramatically contrasting emotions.
