About The Battle Of Mobile Bay: And The Capture Of Forts

In 1878, Foxhall Parker, who had commanded U.S. Navy gunboats during the Civil War, wrote one of the first full historical accounts of the Battle of Mobile Bay and the capture of its Confederate forts. He studied the official reports, letters, and newspaper accounts and interviewed participants of the battle from both sides to produce a clear and accurate narrative of the events from a description of the forces to Farragut’s plans, the passing of the forts, the battle with the Confederate vessels which included the iron-clad Tennessee and culminating in the surrender of the Confederate forts.Parker’s original volume, entitled “The Battle of Mobile Bay: And the Capture of Forts Powell, Gaines and Morgan, by the Combined Sea and Land Forces of the United States, Under the command of Rear-Admiral David Glasgow Farragut, and Major-General Gordon Granger, August, 1864” included various materials in addition to Parker’s history of the battle. Included are the reports by naval and army officers of both the United States and the Confederacy, an Honor Roll describing the actions of each of the 114 Medal of Honor recipients, listings of all of the officers on board each of the US Navy ships, details on the armaments of the ships engaged, maps of the naval battle and the defense of Fort Morgan, and a poem commemorating the battle.
