About Cruel Summer

Product Description All he wants to do is skate. But they have other plans for him. Michael Daniels is seventeen and dreams to enter professional skateboarding contests. But beneath New Manhattan, a city under the oppressive shadow of climate change, exists another world altogether—secret laboratories which threaten society as he knows it. Those with power will get what they want. No price is too high, even if it means making someone special or robbing them of their dignity, freedom . . . or life. The price is too high for Michael, though. He has endured his stepfather’s abuse and mind games for almost as long as he remembers. Until one day he takes matters into his own hands, ruining the lives of those he loves most. And his skateboarding friends, Alien and Victor, are his only hope for freedom. When there is no hope left, friendship is what remains. If you like emotional stories, authoritarian dystopias, and fearless friendships, you’ll love Bernard Jan’s gripping young adult drama. Buy Cruel Summer to enter this chilling world now. Review "An overall excellent Dystopian fiction book, a solid read for sure." - Angel Ramon Medina, indie author of The Fifth Survivor series and The Great Centurion: Punic Wars series written as Angelus Maximus "Bernard did a wonderful job of creating a beautifully written and compelling story that is very descriptive so that the reader feels immersed in the story. I enjoyed the detailed skateboarding stunt instructions at the start of each chapter. His characters were brilliantly written and very compelling." - Rolanda Lyles for Readers' Favorite "This singular novel features young adult drama, the trauma of cruel abuse, a time-distorted version of New York City, and some adequately mind-blowing twists . . . Jan's writing style provides an unforgettable, trippy reading experience. The pace moves fast and the plot is completely unexpected." - Nicky Flowers for Indies Today From the Author Writing, translating, and self-publishing this book in English was an extreme pleasure. And a happy challenge. Like when I was trying to learn the basic skateboarding tricks ages ago, in my early thirties, in my hometown, Zagreb. I even bought my Zoo York deck so I would prove to myself that I was not only a good in-line skater, but that I can skateboard too. And to a point, I did it. Tricks are still a mystery to me, but I didn't catapult myself off the board while cruising the streets at my slow and careful pace or surprised myself with an occasional  ollie . Those were the days. And now are the days too with  Cruel Summer  living its life in English. This is the novel that was born out of my passion for extreme sports, and also from my love for New York City. But  Cruel Summer  is not (just) the novel about extreme sports. It is so much more. Cruel Summer , a story of abused teenager, Michael, and his two skateboarding friends, Alien and Victor, screams with human rights and environmental messages. It paints its pages with the lines and chapters of friendship and loyalty, family and social issues, conspiracy, murder, mystery, investigation, teen romance, and even sci-fi and authoritarian dystopia as a touch of alternative history. And, still, I didn't say it all. It's like all my earlier writing years and novels were a prequel of things to come. Culminating in this novel. Like all my passions, emotions, hopes, tears, daydreaming, expectations streamed into  Cruel Summer  and found its place there. Maybe this is why it feels like home each time I find myself in this story. So beautifully wrapped in Dean Cole's stunning cover. "Believe and tell me what you see." "I see the door. I feel the summer behind that closed door." "Summer?" "Warm and lazy summer that never ends. I hear the rolling of the wheels and the blasting sounds of the boards on the surface of the asphalt! There is joy everywhere. Can you believe that, Mikey? Can you believe  that ?" About the Author Bernard Jan is the
