About Louis-Alexandre Berthier - French Marshal

Louis Alexandre Berthier (20 February 1753 - 1 June 1815), Marshal of France and Chief of Staff under Napoleon, authentic, autographed document (DS). This one page document measures approximately 10" x 14" in size and is dated May 12, 1797. It is written on official stationery and letterhead of the French Republic. A full translation of the document is included with this collection.Also included is an impressive engraved print of Berthier. The print measures approximately 3" x 4" in size and is good to very good condition.  The document is signed by Berthier as Minister of War and grants a Temporary Duty Commission to Citizen Lucien Watrin, Captain of the Infantry.Berthier was created both Prince of Wagram and Neuchtel. He served as Chief of Staff under Napoleon in 1796. Prior to serving with Napoleon, he served under the Marquis de Lafayette in the American Revolution.While with Napoleon, he gained the military leaders' utmost confidence and joined him in his campaign in Egypt. He often rode alongside with Napoleon, whose plans and orders he would dispatch with precision and promptitude.This document is crisply signed at the conclusion by Berthier. It is in good to very good condition, with overall light toning not affecting the signature. There are scattered creases, small tears and expecting intersecting folds. There are previous mounting remnants visible on reverse.
