Louis Lazare Hoche (24 June 1768 - 19 September 1797), French general of the Revolutionary Army, authentic, autographed document (DS). This circa 1794, one page letter, measures approximately 5" x 7" in size. By 1789, Hoche had reached the rank of corporal. He led an unsuccessful campaign at the Battle of Kaiserslautern against the Prussians. However, the Committee of Public Safety still retained his services, even in the midst of the Reign of Terror.Shortly after his wedding, Hoche was arrested on charges of treason. He escaped execution but was still imprisoned in Paris until the fall of Maximilien Robispierre. After his release, he was appointed to command an army against the Vendeans.Hoche is also well known for his defeat of Roayalist forces in Brittany. Not far from the Palace of Versailles, there is a statue of Hoche commemmorating his victory in Quiberon. A station on the Paris metro is also called "Hoche".This untranslated document is crisply signed by Hoche. It is in good to very good condition, with overall light toning not affecting the signature. There are scattered creases on the document. The document is also inlaid on a larger sheet of paper approximately 10" x 13" in size.
