He is considered one of the major German language poets, notable for the lyric potency of his work. Among English readers, his best-known work is the Duino Elegies; his two most famous prose works are the Letters to a Young Poet and the semi-autobiographical Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge. He also wrote more than 400 poems in French. Through the twentieth century his work has had a wide-ranging influence on many English language poets, including Stephen Spender, W.S. Merwin, John Ashbery, and W.H. Auden.Alison Croggon is a poet, novelist, theatre writer, critic and editor who lives in Melbourne, Australia.
