Arian Leaper plays the enchanting Children’s Overture with the lightest touch, and the transparency of the recording ensures that all the woodwind detail comes through nicely, even if his performance could ideally have had a shade more momentum. One might also have wished for a bigger band with a more opulent string sheen, but the texture here well suits the suites of incidental music, an agreeable mixture of the styles of Edward German (especially the Country Dance from As You Like It), Eric Coates and sub-Elgar of the Nursery Suites. All this nicely scored and amiably tuneful music is freshly and spontaneously presented and the recording is nicely resonant.
