About A Butterfly Named Bailey: An Allergy And OIT

"A Butterfly Named Bailey; An Allergy and OIT Transformation Story" is the story of a cute little caterpillar named Bailey, who is allergic to leaves. Oh no! Bailey’s friend, a squirrel named Wesley, introduces her to Oral Immunotherapy Treatment (OIT) where she will eat gradually larger amounts of leaves. Bailey, under the supervision of her allergist, Dr. Calm and with the support of her friend Wesley, works through OIT slowly but squirrely, I mean surely, and graduates to become a strong, beautiful, colorful butterfly! Oral Immunotherapy Treatment (OIT) helps to desensitize patients to foods they are allergic to by eating increasingly larger amounts of the food they are allergic to, under the direct supervision of a board-certified allergist. We are aiming to get the word out there that OIT is an option for children with food allergies, to help explain the OIT process and hopefully to also alleviate some of the fears parents and children may have when starting OIT. It is very important to note that Oral Immunotherapy Treatment should only be performed under the close supervision of a board-certified allergist. "A Butterfly Named Bailey; An Allergy and OIT Transformation Story" was written by Christina Recchiuti, passionate food allergy advocate mom of three and champion of Oral Immunotherapy Treatment (OIT). Having successfully guided two of her children through the transformative journey of OIT, Christina wrote this story hoping to inspire children and shed light on the remarkable potential of OIT. The Characters behind this book are just like you! Charlie When Charlie was 9 months old, he was diagnosed with allergies to peanuts and sesame. There were no options at that time other than avoidance of his allergens. Fast forward a few years and OIT became an option in our area. Charlie completed OIT for both peanuts and sesame and has been in maintenance for both for a few years. Bailey Bailey was diagnosed with a peanut allergy at 14 months. The crazy part was she was eating peanuts with no issue since she was 6 months! Bailey started OIT at 18 months and graduated before her 2nd birthday! The best part was, Bailey and Charlie graduated (Charlie- sesame, Bailey- peanut) on the same day! Bailey had a negative skin test 6 months after OIT and zero on her bloodwork at one year after OIT graduation! Wesley Wesley is our middle son who has no food allergies (knock on wood!) and is always Charlie and Bailey’s biggest supporter, tagging along on many an allergist appointment. Wes is always offering to do his “dose” to support Charlie and Bailey!
