The film was shot quite close to the text of the work, although about half of the play remained, and the director and screenwriter took some liberties: there are scenes in the film that are not in the play, for example, how Hamlet wakes up his father. For the filming of the film, Zefirelli used an ancient castle in northern Scotland, located on the seashore.
