About The Song Of Bernadette (1943) DVD

The fragile girl Bernadette lives in the small French village of Lourdes in the mid-19th century. One afternoon, her siblings leave her by the river to keep her from catching a cold during the crossing. In the grotto, a saint appears to her and asks her to pray with her rosary. She later gives her the task of finding the source. Bernadette finds a spring - it seems that the water has a healing effect. The villagers fear for their village's reputation, and the church initially keeps a low profile. Bernadette is interrogated and has to withdraw her testimony, but she sticks to her claim that she did see ghosts. When Lourdes becomes a great place of pilgrimage, Bernadette travels to a convent, where she is humiliated by her aspiring teacher and dies young of tuberculosis of the bones.
