Amazon.com Uni Umit is an endearingly odd electronic eccentricity from Jan St. Werner, the more outspoken half of Cologne's toy-box techno troubadours Mouse on Mars. Werner's expert knob twiddling and circuit taming account for the flood of boinks, bings, boings, blurps, blaaats, and buzzes. But two distinct personalities emerge as Uni Umit gurgles along: There's the Lithops who gets his jollies by dismantling his equipment while the tape rolls, conceiving strangely moving meditations on the secret lives (and deaths) of machines both simple and complex. Then there's the other Lithops, who delights in sequencing leapfrogging melodies to the tune of thoroughly bizarre syncopations, making music that plays more like the fractured aftermath of happy accidents than the output of studiously programmed machines. Merry clang and clatter come alive with squishy Technicolor synth squiggles and oil-barrel percussion--a one-man band repackaged as space-age oompah ambient Muzak. --Gil Gershman
