Zapp is the self-titled debut album from the brothers Troutman, a collective of funky Ohio natives famous for their Parliament Funkadelic affiliations, heavily sampled source material, and iconic repeated use of the talk-box. Zapp members Roger, Larry, Lester, & Terry Troutman as well as Greg Jackson and Bobby Glover shot to the top of the charts in 1980 with "Zapp" and the album went straight to number one on the US Black albums chart, eventually achieving certified gold status. The album's lead single "More Bounce to the Ounce" solidified the group's place in history, and even had influence from the P-Funk leader himself, George Clinton. When asked about that important recording session, Bootsy Collins (one of the producers on the album and single) stated, "George Clinton just happened to step into the studio this night and he really liked this one part that we had already re-did on 'Funky Bounce'. He advised us to loop that section and put the other talk-box parts over it. At that time, this was considered a genius act, because you had to actually cut the tape and make the right cut, line it up and loop it ... Dr. Funkenstein was way ahead of his time." The legend of Zapp has grown exponentially over the years, but this album is where it all began. Heavily sampled by the likes of Notorious B.I.G., EPMD, Snoop Dogg, 2Pac, Dr. Dre and more, Zapp has proven that it's creative longevity is far reaching and timeless. Roger and Larry Troutman met an untimely end in the late 1990s, however, their spirit lives on through this incredible remastered and repackaged release.
