About Unlocking The Haggada

About the Author RABBI SHMUEL GOLDIN received his BS in psychology and his MA in Jewish education from Yeshiva University, and his rabbinic ordination from the Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary of Yeshiva University. He has served as president of the Rabbinical Council of America (the largest body of Orthodox rabbis in the world) and was spiritual leader of Congregation Ahavath Torah in Englewood, New Jersey, for over thirty years before recently making aliyah. Rabbi Goldin's innovative educational approach to Torah study, Jewish law and Jewish identity is enthusiastically received by traditional and non-traditional Jews alike, as reflected by his inclusion in Newsweek's list of America's Top 50 Rabbis for 2012 and in the Forward 50, Forward magazine's list of Jewish communal leaders who have made a difference in the community at large. Rabbi Goldin and his wife Barbara are the proud parents of five children, and grandparents of fourteen. Product Description "Simply the best Haggada available in the English language!" Rabbi Haim Jachter Why another Haggada? Rabbi Shmuel Goldin, former president of the Rabbinical Council of America, renews the traditional guide to the Passover Seder service with his emphasis on the big picture. What is the Seder really all about? What are the overall goals of this richly textured service? How does the Haggada, step by step, enable the realization of these goals? What are the connections between each paragraph of the Haggada and the next? Why do the rabbis structure the evening as they do? Rabbi Goldin addresses these and other fundamental questions in a clearly defined journey of learning that reaches from the dawn of Jewish history to today's Seder table. In language and style that will appeal to any reader, from the scholar to the novice, this new Haggada takes each Seder participant by the hand along the steps of this extraordinary journey. Here then, a Haggada for the ages, certain to enhance the Seder experience, in home after home, year after year. Review Rav Shmuel Goldin has outdone himself with his new Haggada, "Unlocking the Haggada," published this year by the OU Press. We have come to expect excellence from Rabbi Goldin's "Unlocking the Torah" series on each of the sefarim of Chumash. However, with regard to this volume, Rav Goldin has taken his writing to an entirely new level. Rav Goldin s writing on the Chumash is distinguished by three characteristics. The first is clear, crisp and articulate writing that anyone from beginner to scholar can gain from and appreciate. The full range of sophisticated Torah scholarship is presented before the reader in a succinct style and lucidity that all find inviting. Second is that he addresses matters that are of genuine concern in the text and in Torah living. When there is something in the Torah that contemporary Jews find a bit troubling, there is Rav Goldin to address it. Third is the wise pastoral counsel regarding matters of personal, familial, communal and global concerns that adorn the pages. The sensitive reader emerges a better Jew and a better human being. Unlocking the Haggada, however, is on an entirely new and even higher level. All of the three elements of his work on Chumash are in full blossom in the work on the Haggada. ...Readers will find their expectations exceeded. Put simply, Rav Goldin has crowned his writing career with his best work ever: simply the best Haggada available in the English language! --By Rabbi Haim Jachter, Jewish Link, March 14 2019 Once again Rabbi Shmuel Goldin has taken a text that has been analyzed and probed for more than a millennium and infused it with new meaning, original insights and thoughtful perspectives. Very clearly presented and most compellingly formulated, Rabbi Goldin s commentary focuses on the myriad step-by-step details of the Seder while simultaneously emphasizing its overall structure.... His teachings are both timeless and timely, [practical and conceptual,] scholarly a
