4 Simple Steps to Wonderful Soap Making PRIZE WINNING HARD SOAP Step 1. Cleaning Fat. (This step may be omitted if freshly rendered fat or new lard is used). Boil 3 quarts kitchen grease, lard, tallow or fat with 3 pints of water. Remove from heat and add 3 quarts cold water to clean fat and remove salt. This may be done one quart at a time if larger cans are not available. Skim off clean, solidified fat for step 3. Step 2. Dissolve slowly 1/3 can Red Crown Lye in 1 quart of water and allow to cool to room temperature. Step 3. Heat fat to approx. 95 degrees. Pour lye solution from step 2 slowly into fat stirring as you pour. Stir for about 15 minutes until mixture gets honey-like. Step 4. Pour mixture into pan or wood box which has been lined with slightly damp cloth. Cover with newspaper, blanket or rug to hold in saponification heat. After 24 hours remove soap from mold and cut into bars with fine wire or string. Allow soap bars to cure where air can reach them, but not cold or drafts. Ten to fourteen days of curing will provide a better soap.
