Horsetail produces unbranched fertile stems in the early spring, with brownish spore-bearing cones at the tips. In summer, several sterile stems of up to 0.5 m emerge, each having numerous nodes with four or five side branches around each node. The leaves are reduced to minute bracts arranged in a circle at each node. Also used are E. hyemale and E. fluviatile . It is sometimes adulterated with marsh horsetail ( E. palustre ).
