CARDINAL PAUL-EMILE LEGER The Cardinal who became the first person to receive the Pearson Medal of Peace signs this photograph card with a Christmas sentiment Christmas/Holiday card signed: "Wishing you a/Merry Christmas/and may the peace/of the Lord be with/you./Card Leger" in blue ink. 8¼x3¾. Paul-Émile Cardinal Léger (1904-1991) became Archbishop of Montreal in 1950 and a Cardinal in 1953. In 1967, he left his episcopacy for charitable work in Africa, focused on lepers and handicapped children. In 1979, he became the first recipient of the Pearson Medal of Peace. Cardinal Léger's brother, Jules Léger, was a career diplomat who became Canada's Governor-General in 1974. Lightly toned.
