James joined the U.S. Army at the age of 17 and served in the 23rd Infantry Division during WWII. He was sent to Cebu, Philippines, and his job involved “cleaning up” or picking up weapons in the villages and making sure the Japanese had left the area. During this time he received a minor shrapnel injury to his foot. After the Japanese surrendered, James was sent toJapan where he served as the Chief Clerk for General Douglas MacArthur. In Japan, his division was to again collect weapons from the Japanese.After the war, Jim continued his military career and was even instrumental in establishing a military museum.
