Demeter is the ancient Greek goddess of agriculture, fertility, and the harvest. She is often depicted carrying a sheaf of wheat or a cornucopia, symbols of abundance and nourishment. As one of the twelve major deities in Greek mythology, Demeter is considered a key figure in the cycle of life, death, and rebirth. She is best known for her role in the myth of her daughter, Persephone, who is abducted by Hades, the god of the underworld. During the time Persephone spends away from Demeter in the underworld, vegetation dies and winter comes, representing a period of barrenness. When Persephone returns to her mother, the earth becomes fertile again, symbolizing the renewal of spring and the abundance of the harvest.
