About The Encyclopedia Of Middle East Wars [5

Product Description The monumental, five-volume The Encyclopedia of Middle East Wars: The United States in the Persian Gulf, Afghanistan, and Iraq Conflicts is a must-have resource for anyone seeking to comprehend U.S. actions in this volatile region. Under the expert editorship of Spencer C. Tucker, the encyclopedia traces 20th- and 21st-century U.S. involvement in the Middle East and south-central Asia, concentrating on the last three decades. Beginning with the 1980–1988 Iran-Iraq War, it covers the 1979–1989 Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, the 1991 Persian Gulf War, allied punitive actions against Iraq during the 1990s, the Afghanistan War, the Iraq War, and the Global War on Terror. Many smaller military actions against Iran, Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, and other regimes that have been involved in international terrorism are also included. Diplomacy, religion as it pertains to Middle East conflict, and social/cultural developments are other key subjects of analysis, as is the interplay of politics with military policy in the United States and other nations involved in the region. From Booklist *Starred Review* This resource brings up-to-date the publishers program of providing encyclopedic coverage of major conflicts over the past century. Tucker, who also edited sets on other conflicts (for example, The Encyclopedia of the Spanish-American and Philippine-American Wars: A Political Social, and Military History, 2009, and The Encyclopedia of the Korean War: A Political Social, and Military History, 2d ed., 2010), combines personal military experience and historical perspective. The advisory board and contributors include a wide range of military historians, most associated with academic institutions, some with direct experience in the conflicts. A list of the nearly 1,000 entries is at the front of each of the first four alphabetically arranged volumes, while the last volume consists of documents. The signed entries cover individuals, strategies, operations, armaments, political concepts, historical background, peacemaking efforts, media, economic aspects, and major forces, including nongovernmental liberation movements and insurgencies. Entries are accurate, clearly written, balanced, and sufficiently detailed. At the end of each entry, readers are directed to other entries in the work as well as to books and articles on the topics. Most entries are current into 2009, and most references for further reading were published after 2000. Each of the first four volumes is enhanced by maps of the regions and of large-scale maneuvering in each war as well as black-and-white photographs. The accurate, cumulative index is repeated in each volume. Volume 4 contains charts on military ranks and medals, a chronology from 1777 through 2009, a glossary, a selected bibliography, a list of contributors, and a Categorical Index listing entries under broad topics such as Individuals and Events. Volume 5 comprises 142 documents (sometimes excerpts) from 1839 to 2009, with an introduction and source for each. The total work is highly recommended as a solid resource for public and academic libraries and some high schools. Also available as an e-book. --Arthur Meyers Review "An essential resource for anyone seeking detailed information and in-depth reading on U.S. actions and involvement in the Middle East region during the last 15 years.
