Few would have guessed that lawyers Philly and Carpenter would make a winning team. In his sixties, Carpenter can speak circles around the opposing counsel but remains gruff and direct in his personal life. Philly is decades younger and can’t hide her enthusiasm for the law and her drive to succeed. Although the two haven’t formed a partnership—yet—they often team up to tackle difficult cases. The cases awaiting them in their third book have no clear answers. In one, two high school teenagers face a libel suit from the school principal for a Facebook prank. Another case has a law student facing serious consequences for failing to report another student for cheating. Carpenter’s and Philly’s new cases take them not only back to school but also to hospitals. Philly represents an obstetrician threatened with the loss of his hospital clinical privileges and a hospital patient who is being threatened with deportation. Outside the courtroom, both Carpenter and Philly are less sure of themselves. Both value their independence and find it difficult to open up to others. Philly agrees to move in with her boyfriend, and Carpenter contemplates a similar move with the woman in his life. But as they navigate their relationships, shocking events will threaten their happiness and their future.
