About Femme Du Groupe Des Isles Chitchagoft, Pl. IX

Louis (or Ludovik) Choris (1795-1828), a Russian of German extraction, showed a talent for natural history at a remarkably early age, and won high praise for his work on Biberstein's journey to the Caucasus in 1813. Choris published his work, "Voyage Pittoresque Autour du Monde..." in 1822 and recall the voyage of the brig Rurik from 1815 to 1818, commanded by the Russian Otto von Kotzbue, and the expedition's search for the Northwest Passage. Entering the Pacific via the Horn and returning to Europe via the Cape of Good Hope and St. Helena, Choris, the official artist on the expedition, was invited by the St. Petersburg Academy to accompany Kotzbue and the present work represents a fine cross section of the places that the expedition visited. Choris's magnificent work offers important pictorial representations of the people, landscape, and artifacts of the then mysterious islands of the Pacific, California, Alaska, the northwest coast of America, and other far-off lands. This work has great American interest because of its lithographs and its account of Hawaii, California, the Queen Charlotte Islands, the Aleutians, St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea, and Kotzebue Island in Alaska. This expertly hand-colored lithograph from Choris's "Voyage Pittoresque Autour du Monde...," Femme du groupe des isle Chitchagoft, Pl. IX, measures 16.25" x 10" and is in excellent condition with light staining and foxing. Illustrated in this lithograph is a native woman to the Chichagof Island, which is part of the Alaskan Panhandle. She is adorned with traditional jewelry and skirt and finely detailed.
