About Fix It With Focus: A Story About Ignoring

Product Description Focus. Focus. Focus. That's the advice Blake frequently hears but fails to follow. Blake stumbles from one mishap to another because of a complete lack of concentration. He carelessly demolishes a Lego volcano in his rush to look out a window. A baseball bruises his elbow (and ego) because a dirt clump takes his focus off the game. And he ends up all wet when he interrupts his own story to do something foolish. Can using manipulatives, including squishy erasers, stress balls and glove taps, help Blake maintain focus and strengthen his concentration muscles? Fix It with Focus adds another entertaining lesson to our Executive FUNction series, written for K-6 students who need a helping hand to learn self-control or manage ADHD. Tips for counselors, educators and parents are included. Review I loved this book! I think children aged 2-5th grade would really enjoy it. Kids LOVE when characters in stories mess up, and this book shows how the character learns how to fix his challenges through focus. The story lists a good framework to help kids learn to focus and organize, and suggestions in the back for parents and teachers. I will encourage the team at my school to buy this series! --Alexandra Streeter, Educator I work as an instructional aide and loved this book! It normalizes the behavior that many of the students that I work with have and explains different methods of how to minimize them, such as working with manipulatives. I hope that this book becomes a staple in schools so that both the students that have issues with focusing and for those that need to learn more about why a student is "playing" with an object in class. --Cristie Underwood, NetGalley Fix It With Focus by Bryan Smith is a manual to help children who have issues with sitting still and focusing on the task at hand, such as those with ADHD, autism or sensory issues. It gives solid advice and features understanding to teachers, coaches and parents. I liked that it can also be used with children who don't necessarily fall into the above categories. The illustrations by Lisa M. Griffin are nicely done and help to back up the concepts presented in the story. While the target audience is for elementary-aged children, preschoolers and older children could benefit from the FOCUS mnemonic if presented in an age-appropriate way. Parent and educators who are new to the sensory experience would also benefit as it included some resources and tips at the end of the book. --Elisha Gillette, NetGalley From the Back Cover Focus. Focus. Focus. That's the advice Blake hears again and again but never seems to follow. Blake has a short attention span. In the classroom, he carelessly demolishes a Lego volcano in his rush to see who's outside the window. On the ball diamond, he gets his elbow and his ego bruised because of a distracting clod of dirt. In the lunchroom, he stops telling his own story to flip a bottle and ends up drenched in a puddle. The poor guy stumbles from one mishap to another because of a complete lack of concentration. Will his fortunes change when the caring adults in his life introduce him to hands-on tools and manipulatives, such as squishy erasers, stress balls and glove taps? And can a work/break cycle, coupled with using the word FOCUS as a mnemonic device, make things any better?
