About Wako Matcha Green Tea, Marukyu-Koyamaen, 40g Can

The name "Wako", meaning "peaceful light", connotes the filtered sunlight created by screens called tana that are used to shade the tea bushes before harvesting. The tana help ensure the growth of the freshest and richest tea leaves for matcha production. Wako is the highest grade, ceremonial usucha matcha produced by Marukyu-Koyamaen in the Uji region of Kyoto, Japan. Even people not accustomed to drinking matcha will remark at its smooth, rich flavor. Marukyu-Koyamaen has been growing and producing green tea since the early 1700s and is one of the foremost producers of ceremonial grade matcha in Japan. Known throughout Japan for their high standard of quality, Marukyu-Koyamaen strives for excellence and innovation in all areas of tea production. Marukyu-Koyamaen is located in the Uji region of Kyoto. Historically, Uji is considered to be the birthplace of tea in Japan. Due to its excellent climate and fertile soil, Uji has long been one of the best locations for the cultivation of top quality matcha in Japan. Marukyu-Koyamaen also has the distinct privlege of providing ceremonial matcha to Urasenke Tea School. Urasenke is the pre-eminent tea ceremony school in Japan. A number of Marukyu-Koyamaen matchas hold a special "favored" status by Urasenke Grandmasters Sen Soshitsu Zabosai and Sen Genshitsu Hounsai. The head grandmasters of Urasenke trace their lineage back to Sen no Rikyu, who is considered the historical figure with the most profound influence on chanoyu, the Japanese "Way of Tea", during the Muromachi and Edo periods.
