About BK Precision 5492B Auto-Ranging, True RMS Benchtop

The BK Precision 5492B benchtop digital multimeter (also known as a multitester) is a true RMS, auto-ranging meter for measuring current, voltage, resistance, and frequency in electrical testing and manufacturing applications and for teaching electrical engineering principles. The meter comes with a set of detachable test leads. The meter measures 2- and 4-wire resistance, for a range of accuracy. An audible continuity sensor confirms a circuit conducts electricity, and a diode test detects proper functioning of a circuit’s diodes. The meter also measures period. The meter's internal memory saves up to 10 measurement settings for future recall. The meter's internal buffer can store up to 512 readings and can use the stored data to provide statistical information such as standard deviation and minimum, maximum, and average readings, for tracking measurement trends and sudden changes in readings. The user can set high and low limits for pass/fail testing. The meter can also express AC and DC voltage in decibels (dB), the power ratio of decibels to milliwatts (dBm), and percent of the reading relative to a preset reference value. The math mode manipulates readings according to the formula mx + b, where m and b are user-entered constants for scale factor and offset, respectively, and x is the actual reading as would be normally displayed. The relative mode stores a reading in memory to use as a zero point for subsequent readings so that multiple readings can be compared. A hold function keeps a reading on the display, even after the meter has been disconnected. The user has a choice of slow, medium, or fast measurement rate; the faster the rate, the less accurate the measurements. USB and RS-232 interfaces connect the meter to a computer for data transfer and remote operation (cable included). Triggers can be set to respond to measurement, bus, front panel, and external inputs. This true RMS (root mean square) meter provides accurate readings when measuring linear loads, such as standard induction motors and incandescent lights, where the current or voltage has an undistorted waveform, or nonlinear loads, such as electronic devices or motors, where the current or voltage has a distorted waveform. When turned on, the meter is in auto-ranging mode and automatically selects the correct operating range for the property being measured. It can be switched to manual-ranging mode, which allows the operator to choose the appropriate operating range. The LCD has a 120,000-count resolution, meaning it can display up to 119,999 units (5-1/2 digits) before the operating range needs to be changed. It meets International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) safety standard 61010 and is certified for Category I installations up to 1,000V (which covers protected electrical equipment such as small household appliances) and Category II installations up to 300V (which covers large household appliances and devices connected to a fixed power supply, such as refrigerators and air conditioners). Specifications Maximum alternating current (AC) input 12 amp Maximum direct current (DC) input 12 amp Maximum AC voltage input 750 volts (V) Maximum DC voltage input 1,000V Maximum resistance detected 120 megaohms Maximum frequency detected 1 megahertz (MHz) Period measurement range 1 microsecond to 100 milliseconds Maximum sample rate 57 readings per second Power requirement 110/220V, + or - 10%; 50/60 Hz, + or - 5% Standards met International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) safety standard 61010:2001; European Union EMC (EN) EN61326-1:2006, EN61326-2-1:2006 Weight 2.5 kg/5.51 lb. Multitesters (also called multimeters) are electrical test meters that measure multiple properties of an electrical circuit, such as curren
