Inspired construction sites around the modern urban built environment, “Take A Break” was inspired by a view the artist had from her own home in a high-rise building in New York City. Visible through her kitchen window was another high-rise, on its way up. Each day she watched its progress and began to take photographs. Then, in her studio, she abstracted the essence of the scenes. Here, we see the wood of the panel showing through to indicate building materials. Superimposed are shards of color representing protective netting, metal objects and construction elevators that run alongside the building. Towards the bottom of the painting, you can see a subtle image of workers, “taking a break”.
