Cordyceps militaris is known as Scarlet Club Fungus, or Caterpillar Killer in the U.S. In China it is called 蛹虫草 (Yǒng chóngcǎo) which roughly translates to pupa grass, cordyceps flower, or insect grass flower. The name Cordyceps is derived from Greek kordyle meaning “club”, and ceps meaning “head”. Militaris may refer to their militant nature with insects, or their growth pattern resembling toy soldiers.
