Borax also know as sodium borate, sodium tetraborate or disodium tetraborate is a component of many common household items that include detergents, cosmetics, and enamel glazes. It has many uses on its own or as an ingredient in other products. Used as a deoxidizing flux, Borax keeps metal clean during melting and pouring. For use as a flux: Season crucibles for casting. Mix with denatured alcohol to make flux. Include with metal or casting grain for an easier pour. Other suggested uses: Laundry Detergent Booster: Add 1/2 cup to every load along with your regular detergent. Laundry Stains: Add 1 Tablespoon per 1 gallon of water Unclog Toilets: Scoop as much water out as possible, then add 1/2 cup borax. Let sit for 10 minutes, then add 2 cups of boiling water and flush. Unclog Drains: Poor 1/2 cup borax down drain, then slowly add 2 cups of boiling water. Let sit 10 minutes, then flush out with hot water. Rust Remover: Mix equal parts borax and lemon juice, spread mixture onto rust. Let sit for 30 minutes then wipe clean. Remove Carpet Stains: Mix 1/2 cup of borax with 2 cups of warm water. Saturate stained area using a sponge, scrub thoroughly, let sit for 30 minutes, then vacuum and let dry. Deodorize Carpets: Mix equal parts borax and baking soda, sprinkle all over carpet. Let sit for 30 minutes, then vacuum carpet.
