About Appetite For Disctruction

Autechre's Sean Booth and Rob Brown are always going off about how influenced they are by hip-hop, but gosh, it's hard to hear it in their arid, jittery soundscapes. The German duo Funkstorung got tagged early on as Autechre wannabes, and on their latest album, Appetite for Disctruction, they make the hip-hop connection explicit, rubbing their jagged synthetic beats against some oddball MCs, brewing up a music that some wag has already dubbed "blip-hop." Highlights include "Sounds like a Breakrecord," in which Triple H drops some deadpan science while an anvil angs in the background, and "Think!," a collaboration with an MC named Greenwood in which the duo do to his rap what Timbaland does to rhythm racks: breaks it up, shakes it up, and creates an entirely new sense of flow. But these sorts of things are never new enough. Someone, somewhere, has already figured out how to dance to this. --Jeff Salamon
