The first thing that strikes a listener about this music is how gracefully it carries its age. It is fresh and joyful; a pleasure to hear. And why shouldn't it be? After all, it was made by young musicians (on the earliest of these sessions, Benny Goodman is only 19, tenorist Babe Russin a mere 17, Gene Krupa just 20, leader Red Nichols is 23, and none of the bandsmens yet 30) filled with a spirit of discovery. A handful of these youngsters (the Rollini Brothers, Russin, Manny Klein) were native New Yorkers, but most of them had come to the big town from all corners of the US. Then, as now, NY was where you came to test yourself against the best in the performing arts, and these kids were making it.
