The Gardenia, also known as Cape Jasmine, is the national flower of Tahiti. This shrub has shiny, evergreen leaves and large, very fragrant flowers. The Gardenia is popular with gardeners all over the world, and its fragrance is also widely used for a large variety of products such as soaps, lotions, & candles. It is an heirloom plant that has been in cultivation for centuries . Since they are tropical plants, Gardenias enjoy tropical conditions and can easily be grown indoors (or over wintered indoors) in cooler climates. When grown indoors, most Gardenias reach a maximum height of 3' making them very manageable, or they can also be used as a bonsai specimen. Gardenia (cape Jasmine) is a large evergreen shrub with thick, lustrous,lance-shaped,dark green leaves and extremely fragrant, white flowers, 3in. across(8cm).Blooming throughout the year in warm climates, where temperatures do not drop below 60 (15),this award-winning Gardenia blooms in late spring to early summer in cooler climates. This evergreen shrub enjoys a bushy habit and grows up to 3-6ft. tall and wide (90-180cm) winner of the prestigious award of garden merit of the royal horticultural society. Although it prefers full sun, some shade is appreciated during the warmer months of the year or its leaves may scorch and its buds may fall off if they get too much sunlight. in hot climates, Gardenias grow best with morning sun and afternoon shade. In cooler areas, they can tolerate full sun, especially if their roots are covered with organic mulch. Perfect as a specimen plant and useful as hedges, espaliers or in containers.Great cut flowers. Cut off the faded Gardenia flowers, just below the leaf node, to encourage continuous blooming. Prune shape your Gardenia plant when it is dormant, to promote branching and compact growth.
