About Antivoyage Climbing Citlaltépetl: The Maps

Unlike the arbitrary quads from a geographic survey, I've taken every opportunity to tailor each map to aid you toward your objective for each section of the hike: walking up to the hut from Hidalgo or Zoapan, the summit bid and optionally a descent down the Veracruz side of the mountain. Each clear, concise map has the full text of the navigational narrative from the companion guidebook, Climbing Citlaltepetl, on the verso and uses the same waypoints to coordinate the text with elevation plots, and photographs. On the recto you'll find a contour map created from the highest detail elevation data available. I indicated waypoints along the route in a clear 12 pt font and aligned contour labels at 50 m increments slightly offset from the trail so you won't have to go searching to measure your progress along the ascent. The sheets are printed on handy 11" X 17" sheets--large enough to bring out all the detail of 1:25,000 scale maps on durable waterproof Teslin "adventure paper", but compact enough not to flap about like a sail in a bluster up high. The imagery is applied using a professional-grade printer that delivers incredible resolution and subtlety with pigment-based inks (not dye) and therefore are highly resistant to running, bleeding and they stand up to UV light. The first time I climbed Orizaba, I was deeply unsettled. There was a feeling of walking into a mystery shrouded in blowing clouds. With this map set you won't be climbing alone and I've tackled every angle I know of to define the problem of navigation on the mountain. While blessedly rare, the mountain is not a stranger to accidents. The one-two punch of scheduling your trip during the normal climbing season November-March and staying found are low-hanging fruits that cleave the risk of climbing to something like driving your car to work for a year.
