From the Publisher This was the first hard-cover book our company (Mead Publishing Company) published. It really began over 20 years ago as a labor of love for the author (Bob) and myself (Dan). While he searched the southern California area for pristine examples of restored antique slot machines. I took the photographs using a 4" x 5" Graflex view camera and special lighting which produced an esoteric blend of soft, shadowless photographs. The separations for color printing were all made by hand on a huge process camera. Remember, these were the days before computers; real craftsmen (antiques themselves, today!) did all the work, including color corrections. But the results, even though accomplished by old fashioned technology, have never been duplicated. Slot Machines on Parade stands as a living legacy to all the people who poured their hearts and souls into the most beautiful slot machine picture book of all times. Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Foreword: The motive for the publication of this book was to fill a void in the available literature on antique gambling machines. The few publications that have been written about slot machines have focused on two basic areas: the general description and historical sketch of the machines and the operation and repair of the slot machine mechanisms themselves. What appeared to be missing was an exposition of the inherent beauty of slot machines combined with the reasons why they have become unique antiques in their own right. When this book was first conceived, it was fondly referred to as the "color book" in order to dramatize the fact that the publication was to be aesthetically oriented. At the inception of this project, it was decided that the format would be a collection of high quality color lithographs, merged with a running commentary on the evolution of slot machines.
