What happens in an Episcopal women's prayer association, the Society of the Companions of the Holy Cross (begun in 1884), after the 1937 death of its charismatic founder, Emily Malbone Morgan? An Americanized adaptation of a Church of England monastic order, Companions vow to study social justice concerns e.g. the gritty realities of factory workers' lives, racial injustice, and environmental exploitation-as focus for their spiritual growth Companionship community, and prayers of intercession. This study ends with the 1984 centennial. Adelynrood, 'mother house' of the Society, continues into the present as a place of retreat and varied conferences.
