NEW YORK TIMES, May 17, 1860 * Republican National Convention * William H. Seward takes the early lead Over half of the front page is taken up with details of the first day of the Republican National Convention in Chicago. From this meeting Lincoln would emerge as the dark horse candidate for the Presidency, but at this early point it was Seward who drew all the attention and was the expected winner. I see Lincoln's name mentioned just once in this lengthy report. The pg. 4 editorial reflects upon the convention as well. Eight pages, very nice condition.
