About Dr Cyclop's Dream

Jazz history was unkind to pianist Herbie Nichols for far too long after his untimely 1963 death. In the 1980s and '90s, though, a bona fide Nichols renaissance was afoot, with Misha Mengelberg and Steve Lacy and, later, the Herbie Nichols Project honoring the late, underdocumented great. With Dr. Cyclops' Dream, the Herbie Nichols Project, a sextet fronted by trumpeter Ron Horton (check out Horton's Genius Envy) and tenor saxophonists Ted Nash and Michael Blake, the Nichols legacy is even more on display. Horton's research led to five previously unrecorded Nichols tunes, all of them marked by the composer's quick, dynamic rhythmic challenges as well as his alternately astringent and then overflowing sense of harmonic construction. Pianist Frank Kimbrough, whose Saturn's Child features vibraphonist Joe Locke in slow-motion melodic and improvisational wizardry, here plays Nichols's tunes with reflection and gusto. The band reaches beyond the tunes at times, both for bedrock rhythms and occasional woolly blowing, but they never depart from Nichols's energy and tunefulness. --Andrew Bartlett
