Betaine is used to treat homocystinuria an inherited condition in which the body cannot break down a certain protein, causing build-up of homocysteine in the blood. TMG supplementation may also decrease the amount of adipose tissue and is popular with bodybuilders and athetes wanting lean muscle mass gain. TMG is also sometimes used as a mood stablizier, as it can increase S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) by remethylating homocysteine.
