Tintypes once dominated photography in the 20th century. It was the first practical, inexpensive way for Americans to take and develop photographs. This popularity has given us a visual guide to American Victorian life. Some say that tintypes are the Rodney Dangerfield of photography; they get no respect. Some argued they looked cheap while others defended their raw, natural capturing of life without the glamour. Tintype photography is making a comeback in its interest and popularity. More Than Meets the Eye is a wonderful presentation of this great form of photography while, at the same time, offering the great opportunity to show how people lived in America between the 1850s and 1900s.
