About Public Education Can Be Saved

In 1983 the Department of Education commissioned a group of educators to examine and evaluate our educational system. Based on the previous 20 years of comparisons with other civilized countries the USA was, at best, mediocre. The result was "A Nation At Risk" which not only identified the problems but also recommended solutions. An example of one conclusion was, "Half of the newly employed mathematics, science, and English teachers are not qualified to teach these subjects."Twenty-five years later the Department of Education examined the same system and found that nothing had changed. The results were still mediocre, and nothing had been done to implement the recommendations. Looking at the same situation 13 years later we find the same. Mediocrity and no action. I have written this book based on the recommendations in "A Nation at Risk" and added a few suggestions of my own to improve our education system and added a few experiences from my serving on a local school board which indicates the difficulty in achieving change. If implemented the book should significantly improve our educational system. However, knowing what to do is not the problem. The problem is in getting the suggestions implemented. We need to make everyone aware that our teachers with their Education degrees are not really prepared to teach many subjects, that we are using the look-say method of reading which is not working, that the unions are interfering with our education system, that we need to abolish tenure, and more. This book would help a great deal to accomplish that and lead to saving our public education system.
