About Smith-Cooper International 191 Series Brass Foot

This Smith-Cooper International 191 series brass foot valve has a female National Pipe Taper (NPT) thread inlet connection, and is used as a check valve at the base of a water well. The valve body is constructed of brass for corrosion resistance; its inlet connection is a stainless steel sieve for straining out contaminants, and its outlet connection is female hose thread. A spring-loaded poppet and O-ring seal in the foot valve help prevent water brought into the water well by the water pump from draining back down the pipe.Check valves have two ports and restrict the flow of fluids and other loose materials through a pipe or passageway to one direction. Flow enters through one port and exits through the other, closing when flow reverses or stops. Two common types of check valves are ball cone valves and swing check valves. A ball cone valve utilizes a spring-loaded ball seated against a cone-shaped interior surface to stop the flow of fluid in a forward direction, and a swing check valve has a movable disc on a hinge to block reverse flow. Check valves are rated by their cracking pressure (the minimum upstream pressure required for the valve to operate), and they are used in various water, gas, air, and steam lines.Smith-Cooper International distributes pipe, fittings, and valves under its SCI trademark and manufactures valves under the Sharpe brand. The company, founded in 1993 and headquartered in Commerce, CA, meets International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard 9002.
