Nantucket lightship baskets originated in the nineteenth century on Nantucket Island's famous South Shoal lightship. Captain and crew took to basket weaving to pass the time on board. By the mid-twentieth century these baskets were being avidly collected by the moneyed yachting set. The passion for Nantuckets continues into the present century - and we share it. So much so, that we keep inventing new contemporary baskets with classic Nantucket styling. Our Nantucket baskets are made of traditional materials: hardwood, Indonesian rattan cane and bone turnings. Our signature hardwood is New England white ash. These Nantuckets are woven in China to bring their prices within the reach of ordinary mortals, not just wealthy collectors. The high level of weaving and finishing makes these baskets hard to distinguish from Nantucket baskets in art galleries.
