Anna Jo Douglas is strong to only be fifteen years old. She helps her mother with bills and helps care for her sick grandmother, Muh' Dear. However, being a woman of color in 1960's Alabama has it's downside. Anna Jo loses her job and is beginning to stress about how she and her mother are going to afford the rent. Soon, Anna Jo comes across an ad in the newspaper for a housekeeping position for one of the richest power couples in Alabama, Richard and Lucy Van der Berg. Anna Jo gets the job with no hesitation, but, when Richard and Lucy's son, William, AKA Billy, starts to fall in love with her, he is forbidden to ever see her again. With Richard running for Congress, he doesn't want any scandals in his home... especially his son being with a colored girl! Billy chooses love over his family which causes a disturbance in the Van der Berg home. Now, Billy and Anna Jo must struggle together, dodge the Ku Klux Klan and hate crimes in order to make it to Detroit, Michigan, where they can live out their happily ever after. With so much blood being spilled over the difference in the color of their skin, will Anna Jo decide to stick it out with Billy and find happiness in Detroit, or will she finally give up and let love go?
