Kids today need motivation to eat healthy and exercise. Every day they are surrounded by temptations to eat high sugar, high fat foods. They are constantly tempted to sit and "play" rather than engage in play that involves movement. Despite the best intentions of parents and teachers, childhood obesity rates are skyrocketing. As a nation, we are all bombarded by advertising for unhealthy, quick foods that seem okay in the short-term. But, in the long-term these diets are causing a national epidemic that can impact children physically and emotionally for the rest of their lives. The fun illustrations and creative plot in Zootrition sparks a child's interest to eat healthy and exercise. Ben, an aspiring zookeeper, dreams that he won a certificate to be the zookeeper of his local zoo. He thinks he's doing the animals a favor by giving them fast food every day and installing video games. The animals become very lethargic so the guests stop coming to the zoo. Ben learns that animals, like people, need to eat right and exercise to feel their best. He awakes from his nap, forgets the cotton candy that he so desperately wanted at the zoo, and asks his mom for a nice, crisp, juicy apple. His dream of becoming a zookeeper will takes years to materialize, but the positive effects of a healthy diet and exercise can start right now!
