What’s in a name? More than you might imagine. Take Blaise. Easy to misspell, hard to forget. It’s been around for eons, stems from the Latin word for lisping: blaesus. Thanks largely to a third century Catholic martyr, it has achieved widespread popularity. Today, his February feast day is celebrated all over the globe, from Cusco in Peru to Dubrovnik in Croatia, with prayers and pageantry, piety and parties. Who was Blaise, why does he still matter and what’s it like to be named after the patron saint of wool combers?
