The store owner confirmed that it was originally carved in China in the 1700's. That claim has not been verified with carbon-dating, but the story attached to it is worth knowing as a conversation piece. The wonderful story at that time: it was a peephole window-covering for the Emperor's concubine quarters, for the guards to check the occupants inside the room.
