Using ice that's been hardened in the freezer produces perfect, fluffy shaved ice. 2, You are supposed to apply pressure on the top cover to keep pressure on the ice and keep it contacted with the blades. 3, Once you have shaved down a cup of ice, I recommend not shaving down the last little bits of ice - they will just make bigger pieces that are less snow-like.
