He was inspired to come up with stuff that the kids would respond to. After a time he had produced enough songs to constitute an album and he thought he should record the songs if only to send the tape to the Step-by-Step kids, and to family and friends. Great Big Sun, as the album came to be called, is full of songs that are by turn humorous, educational and poignant yet never lose the wide-eyed naiveté of childhood. Influenced by James Taylor, Bob Dorough (Schoolhouse Rock) and Randy Newman, Great Big Sun avoids synthesizers and drum machines in favor of live acoustic arrangements that include tuba, violin and knee-slap percussion framing Justin's acoustic guitar. The CD immediately drew such a strong response that Justin found himself out of copies before he could print more. Word-of mouth had spread and Justin's songs were, thankfully, making their way to kids all over the place. Adults have taken notice too. Great Big Sun has received glowing reviews in Sesame St. Parent, Family Fun, and other publications across the U.S. It has even found a fan in Hollywood star, Lou Diamond Phillips. Justin has been surprised and delighted by the overwhelming response to his songs and has since been performing his material in schools, libraries, bookstores, and in such national venues as McCabes Guitar Shop in Los Angeles. Emphasizing art over message, he performs with producer and multi-instrumentalist Liam Davis.
