About Dreaming Of California

Product Description "Dreaming of California" tells the story of Pandora the Pelican, who does not want to go to sleep. But when she does doze off, she dreams that she can travel back in time. Pandora goes on exciting journeys and sees ancient sea creatures, saber-toothed cats, giant sloths, and Native Americans. Each of Pandora's adventures is based on real events that occurred in California. About the "Dreaming of" series of books. History can be a challenging subject to teach to young children. That's why Grant Collier and Stephanie Lowman decided to use time-traveling animals to turn historical events into exciting adventures.   "I came up with the idea for a series of children s books back in 2010," says Collier. "But sadly, I was unable to illustrate them, because the dinosaurs I drew looked more like giant, green giraffes. Fortunately, Stephanie Lowman is a superb artist, and I was able to hire her to do illustrate the books." Grant blended Stephanie's illustrations with his own photos in order to create life-like scenes. This turned out to be quite the challenging task. Their illustrations and writing have evolved significantly over the years, culminating in their two newest books "Dreaming of Rocky Mountain National Park" and "Dreaming of California." Review This is a fascinating book in which the author craftily blends historically accurate chronology in California's history with elements of fantasy and adventure. The illustrations are masterful and were created from sketches carefully constructed from hours of research studying fossils of prehistoric creatures as well as current-day ones. --Manhattan Book Review Grant Collier has deftly blended Stephanie Lowman's superbly presented illustrations with his own full-color photographs in order to create life-like scenes. Uniquely informative and impressively entertaining, "Dreaming of California" is especially and unreservedly recommended for family, elementary school, and community library picture book collections for young readers. --Midwest Book Review Reading this with my 4-yr-old grandson has been delightful! --Royalene Doyle About the Author Stephanie Lowman has been sketching and painting for over thirty years. Bringing to life past and present scenes from California was one of her most challenging projects. Stephanie studied fossils of prehistoric creatures and compared them to fossils of living animals to learn how they might have looked. She then spent countless hours drawing all of the animals and people line-by-line. Stephanie currently lives in Arvada, Colorado, with her children, Osiris the Dog and Cassidy the Cat. She is also the illustrator of the books Dreaming of Colorado, Dreaming of Arches National Park, and Dreaming of Rocky Mountain National Park. Grant Collier has been working as a photographer and writer since 1996 and is the author of 15 books. Grant spent many months photographing in California to capture the images for this book. He also traveled to the crystal-clear waters of Aitutaki lagoon to shoot the over/under water scenes. If he couldn't get the image he needed, Grant used a tablet to draw parts of the landscape, including trees, light beams, and a kelp forest. Grant carefully blended Stephanie's artwork into his images. He adjusted the lighting and shadows on the people and animals to match the lighting in the photographs.
