About Suspended Night

Tomasz Stanko's status as one of the authentic figures of European jazz, one of the great originals, has been secure for decades. His ECM albums have been critically-regarded discs of remarkably sustained creativity. In the 1990s, Stanko's work reached a new level of public recognition through 'Litania', his tribute to film music composer Krzysztof Komeda, and the album 'From the Green Hill'. The trumpeter's last release 'Soul of Things' was the first to feature his young Polish band, musicians Stanko had trained from teenage years, and it proved a huge international success. The freshness and enthusiasm of the band, coupled with the authority and soulfulness of Stanko's dark-toned trumpet, had the communicative power to cross borders and generations. Ecstatic press reviews frequently compared Stanko to Miles Davis. And though he has always had his own highly-distinctive sound, the comparisons hold, inasmuch as Stanko has a similar ability to spur young players to new heights. This is even more apparent on the new album. Where Soul of Things revisited some of Stanko's inspirational jazz roots, and was an "in-the-tradition" recording, 'Suspended Night' encourages the band to stretch out in new improvisational terrain, without forsaking their strong sense for grooves and rhythms. His young compatriots have grown as players individually and as a team in the two years since 'Soul of Things' was recorded. Recorded 2003 Pesonnel: Tomasz Stanko - (trumpet), Marcin Wasilewski - (piano), Slawomir Kurkiewicz - (double-bass), Michal Miskiewicz - (drums)
