About Bach: The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book I

Product Description Perhaps the greatest Bach performer of his generation, Sergey Schepkin has been creating music history with his revelatory recordings of Bach's keyboard works. Amazon.com Sergey Schepkin, a young Russian pianist based in Boston for the past decade, has built a following for his exciting Bach interpretations. This set should enhance his reputation, for it's beautifully played and interpretively convincing, though Schepkin's modern Steinway will annoy period-instrument fans, as will his expressive style. His Bach is rhythmically alive, wonderfully articulated, and tonally resplendent. Preludes are infused with feeling, but melodies sing freely. Fugues are well balanced, inner voices exploited even as main subjects are given their full due. The wealth of detail recalls Glenn Gould without his mannerisms; the overall approach is reminiscent of the Russian school of Feinberg and Richter without their hints of romantic excess. Well recorded, too, this is among the best accounts of an endlessly fascinating work. --Dan Davis Review impressive accounts...this collection can stand comparison with the classic recording by Edwin Fischer made in the Thirties. -- Kate Boulton, BBC Music Magazine, November 1999 outclasses every commercially released piano version of the music I have heard, with the qualified exception of Samuel Feinberg s. -- Bernard Jacobson, Fanfare Magazine, November/December 1999
